Russell Hobbs toaster catastrophic failure - part 1

Our Russell Hobbs model #22830 toaster failed, this causes the middle element to stop glowing, while the outer elements glow white hot, far hotter than usual. A strange crackling noise was coming from it. I never knew that a toaster could fail in this way, when it gets much hotter than usual. This filled our kitchen with thick smoke. Never leave your toaster unattended!
