The city of Abovyan
Abovyan is a city and urban municipal community in Armenia, in the Kotayk region. Located 10 km northeast of Yerevan. Geography It is a satellite city of Yerevan. A highway and railway pass through the city, connecting the capital with the northeastern regions of the country. For this reason, Abovyan is sometimes called the "northern gate of Yerevan." Railway station on the line Yerevan - Sevan 6 km from the city is the resort of Arzni. History On the site of the city was the village of Elar (mentioned by Stepanos Orbelian in the 13th century), now the district of Abovyan. During a study in 1960, the Urartian cuneiform of King Argishti I was found, which tells of the conquest of Daran (the pre-Urartian name for the modern region of Abovyan) of the state of Ulusan. Excavations with found materials prove that the territory was inhabited from the end of the 4th century BC. uh.. During excavations, the remains of the fortress were discovered, several objects and the remains of three stages of the Bronze Age were also discovered. In 1961, the village was renamed Abovyan in honor of the Armenian writer Khachatur Abovyan, and in 1963 Abovyan received the status of a city. In 1985, state plans were approved for the construction of a 3.2 km pilot passenger magnetic railway in the Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, which was supposed to connect the cities of Yerevan and Sevan through Abovyan. Construction was supposed to be completed in 1990, but the 1988 Spitak earthquake and military events caused the project to be frozen.
