Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei responds to escalating tensions with the Pentagon over AI safeguards.

Anthropic, the company behind Claude AI, has drawn a firm line against the Department of Defense on two issues: mass domestic surveillance of American citizens and fully autonomous weapons systems. Despite being the first frontier AI company to deploy models on classified U.S. government networks and at National Laboratories, Anthropic says it will not budge on these two red lines. In response, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has moved to designate Anthropic as a "supply chain risk" — a step the company calls contradictory, arguing the government can't simultaneously label them a national security threat and essential to national defense. Anthropic contends the Secretary lacks the statutory authority to restrict the company's non-military use of Claude and has pledged to challenge any such designation in court. Amodei maintains that Anthropic supports all lawful uses of AI for national security beyond these two narrow exceptions, and that neither restriction has affected any government mission to date.
