Monday, April 28th, 1913 “She was just a sweet, playful girl, without a single bad thought in her mind, and she been made the victim of the darkest crime imaginable,” said her uncle, D. R. Benton, yesterday in a bitter denouncement of Mary Phagan’s attacker. Mary and her mother lived with Mr. Benton near Marietta for several years after Mr. Phagan’s death Later, Mary’s mother married J. W. Coleman, and around 1907 the family moved from Marietta to East Point. A year ago, they settled into their small home in Atlanta.
