A teacher named Cecil Caldecott Pitchtree from London is stranded in the American West after missing the last train to Ford's Creek. He encounters Jedediye Dooley, who reluctantly agrees to help him reach his destination in exchange for a share of his future wages. Their journey is interrupted by bandits who steal their belongings, but they eventually escape and continue their travels.
