Tuesday, April 29, 1913: Notes Suggest Killer Tried to Shield Night Watchman

The Atlanta Georgian explored the theory that the two notes found with Mary Phagan were intended to protect night watchman Newt Lee. Reinterpreting one note as “play like the night watch did it” led some to believe the murderer forced the girl to write it or planted it to divert blame. Her stepfather and sister offered differing opinions on whether she authored them.
