Vera Epps, Mary Phagan’s twelve year old chum, said she would help lynch the man who killed Mary if she could, and that she would even like to hold the rope. She said that was all the killer deserved. She had played with Mary only a few days earlier and said Mary had been her playmate almost every day. Vera became emotional as she spoke at her home on Fox Street, near the Phagan home. She was still crying over the loss of her friend and said the sight of Mary’s mutilated body had horrified her. She ddsaid Mary had been a good girl, very nice, sweet, and pretty, and that she had never seen her talk to men. Vera said she could not believe the news when Mrs. Reed came over and told the family that Mary had been found murdered. She also recalled that just the previous Thursday she, Mary, and Lillian Waignel had been playing on the embankment, where they cut their initials into the hard dirt. Vera said they intended to leave Mary’s initials there, “M. P.,” and if the rain washed them away, they planned to carve them again.
