Alice Kingsley returns to London after an expedition in China, only to find her family's finances in disarray and her beloved ship, the Wonder, is to be sold. She learns that her friend, Hether, is in a deep depression after a family tragedy and believes that Alice can help her by traveling back in time to save her family. Alice agrees to help Hether by seeking the Kronospear from the personification of Time itself.
